For the past couple of weeks I've been sitting on my friends' heads, asking them to come up with their favorite expressions in Flemish. The monkey is coming out the sleeve now, as here is what I've compiled.

Special thanks to Elisabeth, Jan, An, Ilse, Sid, Dominiek, Wendy, Natasha and Monika: I don't want to shoot under your pigeons, you guys are the nose of the salmon! I hope I didn't hang your balls out too much!

Below are the literal English translations of 29 classic Flemish expressions. If you know some more colorful expressions (in any language), feel free to let me know in the comments.

The sun rises for nothing

Voor niets gaat de zon op

- Nothing is for free

Now the monkey is coming out of the sleeve!

Nu komt de aap uit de mouw !

- The true motives are revealed

I am staring the cat out of the tree

Ik ben de kat uit de boom aan het kijken

- I’m waiting to see what the options are

Stop sitting on my head!

- Stop annoying me!

Don’t shoot under my pigeons

Niet onder mijn duiven schieten

- Don’t take credit for what I did

That is not a kitty to pick up without gloves

Dat is geen katje om zonder handschoenen aan te pakken

- That’s a woman that knows what she wants

He doesn’t have a nail to scratch his ass

Hij heeft geen nagel om aan zijn gat te krabben

- He’s really poor

Money doesn’t grow on my back

Geld groeit niet op mijn rug

- I’m not made of money

I don’t have a donkey that shits money

Ik heb geen ezeltje dat geld schijt

- I don’t have money to burn 

You can sleep on two ears

Ge kunt op twee oren slapen

- Don’t worry about it

To pull your poop back in

Uwe kak intrekken

- To break your promise / go back on your word

To get under the knee

Onder de knie krijgen

- To get the hang of something

Pearls for the pigs

Parels voor de zwijnen

- To make a nice effort for someone and they don’t appreciate it

To not have all seven in a row

Ze niet alle zeven op een rij hebben 

- To not be very clever

Don’t bet everything on one horse

Niet alles op één paard wedden

- Keep your options open

As stupid as a pig’s behind

Zo stom als het achterste van een varken

- Not very smart

He gets the blood from underneath my nails

- He’s really fucking annoying

That’s the nose of the salmon

- That’s the best of the best

A donkey doesn’t bump itself into the same stone twice

- The more visible you make yourself the more open you are to criticism

- It’s much easier to criticize someone else than to do it yourself

He who digs a hole for someone else, falls in it themselves

Wie een put graaft voor een ander, valt er zelf in

- When you talk bad about someone else, it reflects more on you 

East, west, home is the best

Oost west thuis best

- There’s no place like home

Like the little clock ticks at home, it ticks nowhere else

Zoals het klokje thuis tikt, tikt het nergens

- There’s no place like home

It hangs my balls out

Het hangt mijn kloten uit 

- I’m fed up

The pot blames the kettle that it’s black 

De pot verwijt de ketel dat hij zwart ziet 

- To blame somebody else for something when you’re doing the same

Don’t dig old cows out of the creek

Geen oude koeien uit de gracht halen

- To bring up negative things from the past
